The recent Deseret News/KSL Poll of Utahns' opinions of Sen. Luz Robles' SB60 confirms what I've long believed: A significant majority of state citizens embrace thoughtful, non-reactionary positions on immigration issues. I hope that the results of this timely poll will persuade state legislators to withdraw support from far less compassionate and responsible proposals — and to stand behind measures endorsed by the majority of their constituents.
Given all that is at stake, Utah cannot afford to be a follower of the wrong-headed examples of Arizona and others. Instead, our legislators should continue to be guided by the principles underscoring the Utah Compact and should courageously lead out in compassionately resolving the difficult issues of immigration.
