1. SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 1 — Steven McKinney, 23, was accidentally shot and killed at his home at 436 N. Redwood Road. A group of friends were talking when a gun held by McKinney's close friend Ian Lewis went off. Lewis was charged with manslaughter. Motive: accident. Method: shooting.

2. OREM, Jan. 4 — Norma Villalobos-Guzman, 36, was stabbed to death in her home at 536 E. Sage Circle. Her husband, Roberto Aguirre Ramirez, 27, stabbed himself during the dispute and spent several days in intensive care before he was arrested. He had been deported on a drug conviction just months earlier. Though initially charged with murder, Ramirez pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison. Motive: domestic. Method: stabbing.

3. DELTA, Jan. 5 — Millard County sheriff's deputy Josie Greathouse Fox, 37, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on US-50 east of Delta. Roberto Miramontes Roman, 37, has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in Fox's death and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony. He was arrested the next day in a shed in Beaver following a statewide manhunt that saw SWAT teams raid homes in Salt Lake City, Nephi, and Fillmore. Ruben Chavez-Reyes, 36, was arrested along with Roman and charged with obstructing justice, a second-degree felony. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison. The pair was apparently smoking meth the night before the shooting and officers who interviewed Roman said he told them he shot at Fox because he believed she pulled him over because he was Mexican. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

4. OGDEN, Jan. 24 — Robert Hendricks, 2 months, was allegedly smothered by his mother inside their Ogden apartment. Investigators say Jewell Marie Hendricks, 26, told them she'd become frustrated with the child's crying and smothered him. Robert Hendricks' twin brother was placed in state custody. Jewell Hendricks is charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: suffocation.

5. MILLCREEK, Jan. 29 — Tetyana Nikitina, 34, was shot multiple times and killed just as she had left her pre-school job at 336 E. 3900 South and was getting into her car. Mary Nance Hanson, 71, Nikitina's former mother-in-law, was charged with murder. Nikitina had been married to Dale Jankowski and they had two children together. She was engaged to be married to another man at the time of her death. When Hanson pleaded guilty, she requested the death penalty. When the judge told her that wasn't an option, she replied, "Well, then I guess I didn't do a good enough job." Hanson was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

6 and 7. LAYTON, Feb. 6 — Rebecca Kaye Toone, 4, and Rachel Ana Toone, 15 months, died after Fumitoxin tablets were placed around their Layton home. Coleman Nocks, 62, was charged with two counts negligent homicide in connection with the deaths. Nocks was employed by Bountiful-based Bugman Pest and Lawn Inc., which was called to remove voles, a small species of rodent. Authorities believe the Toone girls may have inhaled phosphine fumes emitted from Fumitoxin, a rat poison. A product manual for Fumitoxin states that the pesticide should not be placed "into a burrow system that is within 15 feet" of an occupied building. Investigators say Nocks placed tablets less than 10 feet from the Toones' front door. Motive: accidental. Method: fumes.

8. PROVO, Feb. 21 — Amy Candland, 41, was beaten, raped and strangled to death in the house she shared with her nephew at 1075 E. 300 North. Her nephew, Damien Candland, was arrested after a hiker found her body in Hobble Creek Canyon, east of Springville. Damien Candland was charged with murder, rape and desecration of a body. Authorities believe he may have killed his aunt to prevent her testimony in a pending assault case. Motive: unknown. Method: strangulation.

9. SOUTH SALT LAKE, Feb. 22 — Steven Leon Villiard, 64, was shot to death inside his home, 73 E. Claybourne Ave. (2770 South). Jason James Davis, 37, and Chad Duran Nester, 24, were charged with murder and a trial is scheduled for March. Villiard had a long history of drug-related crimes. Alleged motive: drugs. Method: shooting.

10. KEARNS, March 5 — Amos Pacheco, 25, was shot and killed while helping his girlfriend drop off her children to her ex-husband and the father of the children. Police say Joshua James Montoya, 26, shot Pacheco in the chest following an argument between the two men. Pacheco was sitting in the passenger seat of his girlfriend's car when he was shot. The children had already gone inside the house. Montoya is charged with murder. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: shooting.

11. WEST VALLEY CITY, March 9 — Maralee Andreason, 55, was beaten to death inside her apartment. Her boyfriend, Thomas J. Valdez, 41, was charged with murder. Valdez previously served prison time for beating up a former girlfriend. Police say Andreason was brutally murdered, suffering two open head wounds, two stab wounds to her cheek and torso, blunt force trauma to her head and torso, countless bruises and scrapes and multiple rib fractures. Valdez is scheduled to stand trial Jan. 11-13. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: beating.

12 and 13. SALT LAKE CITY, April 2 — Vernee Ronald Halliday, 73, and Linda Covey Halliday, 69, were shot and killed inside their Federal Heights home. Their son, Vernee Stuart Halliday, 35, was believed to have committed the murders before shooting and killing himself. The Hallidays lived at 1475 E. Penrose Drive. Friends and family said they did not know of any trouble with Stuart Halliday or any trouble between him and his parents. Police are also unsure of a motive. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

14. WEST JORDAN, April 4 — The body of Benicio Hernandez-Herrera, 33, was found in a muddy field near 6300 West and 7000 South. Benjamin Arriaga-Luna, 37, was charged with murder. He said he believed Hernandez-Herrera was having an affair with his wife. Alleged motive: jealousy. Method: shooting.

15. SALT LAKE CITY, April 5 — Stephanie Williams, 19, was shot and killed in her grandmother's house at 474 E. 600 South. Delfino Arriaga-Luna, 31, allegedly told police he shot Williams twice in the head. He is the brother of Benjamin Arriaga-Luna, who was accused of a separate homicide that happened the day before. Investigators, however, do not believe the two incidents are related. Arriaga-Luna was charged with murder, obstruction of justice and the use of a firearm by a restricted person. Motive: unknown. 16. WEST VALLEY CITY, May 1 — The body of Ngor Ngor, age unknown, was found in his driveway at 3979 S. Renault Circle (2060 West). Investigators are calling his death a homicide, but have no suspects. Motive: unknown. Method: unknown.

17. MIDVALE, May 6 — Sarah Hernandez, 26, was strangled to death. Her common law husband, Carlos August Soto-Lopez, 29, was charged with murder. Investigators said Soto-Lopez struck Hernandez with a glass pitcher, which caused it to break, and then strangled her with a phone cord. When police arrived, Soto-Lopez allegedly told them he killed his wife and lifted his bloody hands in front of him as if he was ready for handcuffs to be placed on him. He was also charged with two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: strangulation.

18. LAYTON, May 11 — Ethan Stacy, 4, was beaten to death not long after he arrived in Utah from Virginia to spend the summer with his biological mother and her fiancee. His body was disfigured and buried in a remote area of Powder Mountain. Police say he was left alone, locked in an apartment bedroom, while his mother went to get married because they feared people would call police if they saw Ethan's injuries. Ethan's mother and new step-father, were arrested shortly after Ethan's body was found. Stacy's tragic story became known nationwide. Nathan and Stephanie Sloop were each charged with capital murder and could be sentenced to death if convicted. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: beating.

19. TAYLORSVILLE, May 26 — Heather Quast, 18, was stabbed and killed in a drug deal gone bad along the Jordan River Parkway near 3900 South and 1100 West. Jose Neri, 19, and Cristian Alzaga, 19, were both charged with murder. A homicide warrant was issued for the arrest of a third man also believed to have been involved.Alleged motive: drugs. Method: shooting.

20. KEARNS, June 13 — Vanessa Hart, 4, died of head trauma and massive internal injuries. Her father, Clinton Hart, 22, was charged with murder, two counts of child abuse and one count of obstructing justice. His live-in girlfriend, Marina Navarro was charged with aggravated murder and three counts of child abuse. Police say older injuries showing a pattern of child abuse were discovered during the autopsy. Doctors said the injuries could not have been caused by falling down a flight of stairs, as was claimed. Court proceedings for Navarro were stalled until she could deliver the baby she conceived with Hart. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: beating.

21. SALT LAKE CITY, June 14 — Deborah Haudley, 34, was killed in a hotel room. Haudley had been in a fight with her boyfriend, Oscar Reyes, 34, the night before and he allegedly punched her in the face. When he awoke the next day, she was deceased in the bed next to him. Reyes was charged with homicide by domestic assault, a third-degree felony. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: beating.

22. SALT LAKE CITY, June 24 — Juan Jose Rubio-Navaro, 32, was shot and killed while sitting at the edge of his driveway at 545 N. New Star Drive (1785 West), waiting for a ride to work. Jose Adrian Rodriguez-Ramirez, 26, and his roommate, Jose Allan Gallegos-Mendoza, 25, were each charged with murder. Marta Campusano, 24, the victim's wife, was charged with obstruction of justice, Police say she was having an affair with Rodriguez-Ramirez, which she tried to hide from investigators. A preliminary hearing for Rodriguez-Ramirez and Gallegos-Mendoza is set for Feb. 4. A trial for Campusano is scheduled to start Jan. 19. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

23. WEST VALLEY CITY, June 30 — Joseph Hewitt, 65, was found unconscious and bleeding at the foot of a staircase by police officers. Hewitt's nephew, Kenneth Toso Tupea, 32, was charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with Hewitt's death. The second charge stemmed from the beating of another uncle, who was 69 years old at the time, with a cane. He allegedly acted violently with the men following an argument because Tupea apparently believed Hewitt was abusing his children, witnesses later testified in court. Alleged motive: domestic. Motive: beating.

24. SANDY, July 13 — Magda A. Aleman, 33, was found dead inside her home, 11436 Tiger Tail Circle (1100 East). She was shot and suffered blunt force trauma. Cody Reece was linked to the crime several months later and charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony. After investigators were able to tie him to the crime using DNA evidence, they were able to re-trace his footsteps and discovered Reece was involved in a series of crimes that day. He had been stealing mail in the area, was intoxicated, and was arrested that same day after breaking into another Sandy house after the murder. He assaulted the home owner and ran, but was caught after neighbors chased after him and held him until police arrived. Reece was in and out of jail two more times before Sandy detectives linked him to the homicide. He has a roll call hearing Jan. 6. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

25. SOUTH SALT LAKE, July 27 — Five-year-old Stephanie Guadalupe Espindola-Cedillo was beaten to death, allegedly with a spatula. Angeles Cadillo-Castro, 31, the girl's mother, was charged with murder. Her daughter was found at their home at 726 W. Timbercreek Way (3875 South). Castro called her husband at work, telling him she couldn't wake their daughter up. Bruises were found on the girl's back, legs and buttocks. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Cadillo-Castro on Feb. 18. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: beating.

26. TAYLORSVILLE, Aug. 26 — Steven Norman, 29, was shot in the head and killed at 2216 W. Heatherglen Drive (4400 South). Steven Lee Sanchez, 31, and Rodrick Travis Dejolie, 26, were each charged with murder and aggravated burglary. Sanchez was arrested Aug. 31 in Farmington, N.M., and Dejolie was arrested Sept. 17 in Flagstaff, Ariz. Witnesses said both men stated earlier in the evening that they had a "score to settle" with Norman. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.

27. SOUTH SALT LAKE, Aug. 28 — Maria Nevarez-Tolentino, 36, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Sun River Apartments, 1080 W. 3300 South. Salvador Alejandro Landin-Castanon, 29, the victim's ex-boyfriend, was arrested and charged with murder. Landin-Castanon was reportedly upset that Tolentino was going to go on a date with another man. She had broken up with him five months earlier. Landin-Castanon pleaded guilty to murder in December. He is scheduled for sentencing Jan. 24. Motive: domestic. Method: shooting.

28. WEST VALLEY CITY, Aug. 30 — Taylor Pankow, 15, was stabbed to death in the parking lot of Family Dollar, 4760 W. 4715 South. A fellow Hunter High classmate, 16-year-old Jonatan Bustos, was charged as an adult with murder. The stabbing was reportedly the result of a dispute over an iPod. Alleged motive: dispute. Method: stabbing.

29. WEST HAVEN, Aug. 30 — Malachi Darcey, 30, was severely beaten outside the Outlaw Western Saloon, 1254 W. 2100 South. His family pulled him off life support a day after he was injured during a fight between two groups. Police say they interviewed "dozens" of witnesses, but all gave conflicting testimonies. Various suspects were named by witnesses, but no arrests were made. The Weber County Attorney's Office declined to file charges due to insufficient evidence. Police say their investigation is complete and they may consider re-classifying the death as an accident, because they believe the fatal blow may have been sustained when Darcey's head hit the sidewalk. It is still currently classified as a homicide. Motive: unknown. Method: beating.

30 and 31. LAYTON. Sept. 8 — James Warhola, 8, and Jean Warhola, 7, were strangled to death inside their home, 2184 N. Snoqualmie Circle. Sun Cha Warhola, 44, their mother, was charged with two counts of aggravated murder. The children's father, Kenneth Warhola, arrived home after work and found his wife locked in the children's bedroom. She let him in after 15 minutes where he found the childrens' lifeless bodies on the bed. The cause of death for each child was believed to be strangulation. The woman's mental competency will be discussed in a court hearing Jan. 14. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: strangulation.

32. RICHFIELD. Sept. 24 — Lori Rickenbach, 41, was found shot to death in her home, 747 N. 400 East. Police say her husband, Scott Rickenbach, 45, shot her and then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. Investigators say the couple, who were parents of four children, were having marital problems. Motive: domestic. Method: shooting.

33. CEDAR CITY, Sept. 28 — Cayden Lasseter, 14 months, died from serious head injuries. Thomas Harry Canum III, who was watching the infant, was charged with child abuse homicide. Canum was living with Lasseter's mother at the time and was the only adult home the night the fatal injuries were sustained. Police say it appears to be a shaken-baby case. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 19. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: shaking.

34. CEDAR CITY, Sept. 29 — Tayshaun Gorecki, 11 months, was originally injured on Dec. 18, 2009, but died later as a result of his injuries. His father, Andy Gorecki, 25, was charged with child abuse homicide. He remained in jail the entire time the boy was on life support. Investigators believe the infant died as a result of shaken baby syndrome. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 19. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: shaking.

35. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 2 — Roy Jackson, 50, was killed during a fight at 451 S. State. Rueben Cesspooch Jr., 52, was charged with third-degree felony homicide by assault. Both men were homeless. Cesspooch pushed Jackson to the ground, causing him to strike his head, according to court documents. Jackson suffered a skull fracture and brain damage. Alleged motive: unknown. Method: assault.

36. BOUNTIFUL, Oct. 4 — Tina Wilson, 39, was found dead inside her apartment near 500 South and 200 East. Police believe she died Sept. 29. The West Clinton Elementary janitor had her hands and head wrapped in packaging tape and her body was hidden in a bedroom under blankets and a mattress. Chad R. Mecham, 27, a friend and former co-worker whom Wilson would help every so often, was later charged with murder. Mecham wasted no time pleading guilty and was sentenced in November to 15 years to life in prison. No explanation was ever given. Motive: unknown. Method: strangulation.

37. WEST VALLEY CITY, Oct. 31 — William M. Seager, 58, was found dead in his home at 3305 W. 4630 South. His son, William Chad Seager, 31, was later charged with murder. The younger Seager allegedly pushed his father, causing him to hit his head. He left, and when he returned his father was still on the floor and his breathing was shallow. Police say the son then went to Wendover. When he returned the next morning, he allegedly put a garbage bag over his father's head and "tiedowns" around his upper body and feet before calling police. He was charged with murder, robbery and obstruction of justice. Alleged motive: domestic. Method: assault.

38. SOUTH SALT LAKE, Nov. 21 — Mary White, 62, was found dead in her home at 3414 S. 300 East with a knife stuck in her neck. Her son, John Paul White allegedly told police he strangled and stabbed his mother multiple times. He is charged with murder. His next court appearance is Feb. 18. Motive: domestic. Method: stabbing.

39. SOUTH SALT LAKE, Nov. 30 — Sherry Black, 64, was fatally stabbed at the business she and her husband owned, B&W Billiards and Books, 3466 S. 700 East. Black, the mother-in-law of Larry H. Miller Group CEO Greg Miller, dealt in rare books, including many LDS titles. Police have not named any suspects and are following leads about a belt they believe the killer left behind. Motive: unknown. Method: stabbing.

40 and 41. ST. GEORGE, Dec. 11 — Jerrica Christensen, 20, of Santa Clara, Brandie Sue Dawn Jerden, 27, of St. George, were found dead inside a home at 575 S. Main. One was shot to death and the other died as a result of "incised" wounds. Prosecutors were not releasing additional details. Paul Ashton and Brandon Smith were each charged with aggravated murder and aggravated assault. Alleged motive: unknown. Method: shooting, stabbing.

42. MOAB, Dec. 12 — William Paul Tague, 34, of Denver, was stabbed to death outside Denny's, 989 N. Main. Andrew Todd Curtis, 34, of Moab, a recent prison parolee, was arrested in connection with the incident. Curtis previously served eight years in prison for a shooting in Moab. Motive: unknown. Method: stabbing.

43. KEARNS — Daryl Antonio, 22, was beaten to death inside his home, 5312 W. Lewisclark Drive. His half brother, Christopher Blackhorse, 34, was charged with murder. Blackhorse originally called 911 telling them his half-brother was in full arrest, Investigators said the two got into a fight that involved the use of a knife, furniture and fists. Police said there was evidence that Blackhorse also tried to change the crime scene. Blackhorse was also charged with obstructing justice. Alleged motive: unknown. Method: assault.

44. ROY, Dec. 16 — John F. Sharp, 37, was shot and killed in an apparent act of self-defense. Sharp was choking Mellony Pursel, 32, at 1920 W. 4400 South, when he was shot by the woman's 17-year-old girl niece, who fired two shots. Sharp was killed and Pursel injured when one of the bullets went through Sharp and hit her in the shoulder. Sharp had been at the house a couple of times that day, and police were called each time. When he was shot, he had just been released from jail again and had a restraining order against him. Motive: self-defense. Method: shooting.

45. SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 18 — The body of Kristine Marie Gabel, 45, was found in a bathroom at Fairmont Park near 2300 South and 900 East. Police believe there was some sort of struggle prior to her being killed. The mother of two was once a stewardess and real estate agent before falling deep into alcoholism and eventually becoming homeless. Paul David Vara, 30, was charged with aggravated murder, object rape and forcible sexual abuse. Prosecutors say the woman had been strangled, disemboweled and her body mutilated. Motive: unknown. Method: strangulation.

46. SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 18 — Cisco Montanez Cross, 45, was shot and killed in an apparent drug deal gone bad. 47. PROVO, Dec. 24 or 25 — Lisa Runolfson, 57, was shot and killed by her husband Steven Runolfson, 56, before he apparently turned the gun on himself in what police said appeared to be an agreement. The couple — who co-owned the upscale, French eatery La Caille — had recently lost a lawsuit filed by a third partner, who was awarded $4.7 million and were trying to sell the restaurant and the 20-acre property that surrounded it for $20 million. Motive: unknown. Method: shooting.
