With both stands packed, the north grass hill smothered with high school football fans, and two undefeated teams, the scene was set for another rivalry chapter to be written.
Logan junior quarterback Jeff Manning found wide-out Mike Hlavaty from 9 yards out for the winning touchdown on a perfectly executed out route in the corner of the end zone.
Manning put together a memorable drive, trailing 14-9 with 3:02 remaining in the football game. The Sky View defense slowed Manning and the Grizz throughout the game, but it was Manning who would play hero when it mattered.
"The offense was struggling all game, and we just stuck with it coming through at the end," Manning said. "This is a dream come true for me. This was Sky View our rival words can't explain how I feel right now. This is amazing, just amazing."
Sky View came into the contest riding two defensive shut-outs, out-scoring their opponents 78-0 with their potent spread offense. The Logan Grizzlies were coming off an impressive 36-6 mauling of CampbellCounty.
A total of 15 punts on the night surprised those in attendance who figured each team would continue to light up the scoreboard. Sky View ended with 274 yards of total offense, and Logan had 309 yards.
The Grizzlies stumbled in the fourth quarter, trailing 14-9. A muffed punt return, followed by an interception on their next offensive play, looked to doom the Grizzlies. But the Bobcats uncharacteristically could not move the football as they've been accustomed to, punting five times in the second half alone.
"We feel fortunate to win," said Logan coach Mike Favero. "We feel like Sky View is one of the best teams in the state. This was just such a great atmosphere, and everyone in attendance probably left the game thinking, 'Wow, what a great high school football game.'"
Favero went on about the play of his junior quarterback. "From a psychological standpoint it was huge what he did. To come out in the fourth quarter and win, it is a sign of his confidence. Once you've experienced something like that, the next time you're there you know you can do it because you've been there before."
Manning ended the game 16 of 31 for 211 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The Grizzlies next host the Judge Memorial Bulldogs in a 3A showdown.
