U. gymnasts keep top spot in rankings

The University of Utah remains No. 1 in the women's NCAA gymnastics rankings this week, the final week when the coaches' poll is determined by raw season average.
Next week, the rankings will be done by Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) for the rest of the season. That is an average of six meets, three of which must be on the road, with the high score thrown out. That will likely scramble the order considerably. Not all teams have RQSs yet.
Utah's 197.675 in its opening meet, a win over UCLA, is the nation's highest score this season. But for next week's rankings, it will be of no use to the Utes, though their next-best score to date, 196.875, is among the nation's highest, too, and that will be useful.
BYU moved from 13th to a tie for 11th this week, and Southern Utah from 18th to 15th.
In event rankings, Utah remained No. 1 on bars (49.192 average, up from last week's 49.155) and stayed No. 2 on beam (48.912) and vault (49.15), and moved from sixth to fifth on floor (49.096).
Southern Utah moved from eighth to seventh on floor (49.033), and BYU moved from eighth to seventh in vaulting (49.033).
Individually, Utah's Ashley Postell dropped from second to fourth in all-around (39.395), but Rachel Tidd stayed fifth (39.292) in all-around and remained No. 1 on bars (9.905) by .001 over Michigan's Elise Ray.
BYU hosts SUU on Friday at 7 p.m., and Utah State is at Boise State the same night. Utah competes next at Nebraska on Sunday at 1 p.m.
