Ute gymnasts drop to No. 2 in rankings due to average

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 25 2005 12:00 a.m. MST

The weekly NCAA women's gymnastics poll moved to using raw season average for its rankings, and the change was good for Brigham Young, Southern Utah and Ute sophomore Rachel Tidd, but dropped the University of Utah from No. 1 to No. 2 and Utah State to 29th from last week's 24th position.
The first few polls of the season were based on high score, but as the season progresses and teams have enough meets for representative averages, the poll begins to use those. When teams have enough meets to go by Regional Qualifying Score (an average of six meets, three of which must be on the road, with the high thrown out), then RQS becomes the factor in the rankings for the rest of the season.
Two-time defending NCAA champion UCLA has taken over the No. 1 spot, having had three meets with scores above 197. Utah has one such score, 197.675, but that is still the highest score in the nation, achieved in upsetting UCLA (197.30) in the season opener.
Utah will host No. 3 Michigan Friday night in the Huntsman Center at 7.
Tidd has taken over No. 1 on uneven bars, moving up from No. 2. Her average is 9.925. Ute freshman Ashley Postell dropped from a tie for No. 1 with teammate Annabeth Eberle to No. 2 behind UCLA's Kristen Maloney in the all-around, 39.558-39.537, and Eberle took a tumble to a tie for 13th with teammate Nicolle Ford and Florida's Breanne King with 39.158 averages.
As a team, the Utes are ranked No. 1 on balance beam with a 49.117 average and are No. 2 on vault behind UCLA (49.219) at 49.183. BYU rates sixth on vault at 49.058. The Utes are third on bars (49.133) behind UCLA (49.25) and Michigan (49.167). They are sixth on floor (49.00), followed by BYU (48.983) and SUU (48.975).
