Runners begin the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Salt Lake City on Saturday. At left, Crystal Yetter, her sister, April Pope, and Yetter's daughter, Wynter, listen to the national anthem before running in memory of their grandmother, Margaret Pope. The Komen race is held annually Salt Lake's version since 1997 to increase awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for research and other support programs. The Utah chapter reports on its Web site that more than $2.5 million has been raised in the state, with 75% of net proceeds going to programs in Utah. The remainder goes to the national foundation for breast-cancer research grants.
