Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, has asked for more time for public comment on a proposed mercury stockpile in Tooele.
Some 4,436 metric tons of elemental mercury are stored now in four U.S. locations. The U.S. Department of Defense is considering consolidation of the mercury at Tooele's Utah Industrial Depot.
The public comment period regarding the storage plan is scheduled to end this Friday. Bennett has requested a 90-day extension of that period.
