DRAPER — Traffic on northbound Interstate 15 at 11900 South was delayed for several hours Tuesday as Utah Department of Transportation crews fixed a problematic section of pavement.

UDOT spokesman Tom Hudachko said construction crews already on site noticed about 10 a.m. that asphalt on a temporary portion of the freeway was failing.

They immediately shut down two of the three northbound lanes and began repairs, causing about a 10-minute delay for motorists. One of the lanes was reopened at 1 p.m. and crews continued to work on the remaining lane until late Tuesday afternoon.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 have been moved onto the same side of the freeway while crews reconstruct the 12300 South interchange. The stretch of road in question, constructed during the winter, moves northbound traffic from that bridge back to the existing northbound side of the freeway.

Hudachko said crews believe water from last week's rains seeped between the temporary asphalt and the existing concrete roadway and made the surface unstable.
