From Deseret News archives:
American Fork man dies in rollover
A teenager was killed and another remains hospitalized in serious condition after they were ejected from their Jeep Wrangler
Killed was:
Kolby Demarco, 19, American Fork.
The driver of the Jeep, Annie Jorgensen, Lindon, was transported by helicopter ambulance to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where she is being treated for serious injuries.
Utah Highway Patrol said witnesses reported seeing a black Volkswagen Jetta cut off the Jeep, forcing it into the median where it flipped and rolled several times.
Neither the driver nor the passenger of the southbound Jeep was wearing a seat belt.
Joe Pantos, an employee of Tubzz, a bathtub manufacturing business located near the scene of the accident, was an eyewitness to the rollover.
"I heard this big boom and looked out the window just in time to see the Jeep flying though the air," Pantos said. "There was chaos and cars driving all over the place. The Jeep flew and rolled maybe 15 times."
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
"We had about 40 people line up and watch from our parking lot," Green said. "We definitely had the best view since we were only 40 feet from the accident."
Green and Pantos said the woman was ejected more than 100 feet from the Jeep.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Doug McCleve said officers are trying to locate the black Jetta.
Green said Tuesday's crash wasn't the first he has seen near his business.
"It's unbelievable. Every time we turn around, we see an accident," Green said. "Just two weeks ago we saw a truck burn up."
The accident caused congestion in both the northbound and southbound lanes and, consequently, two semitrucks bumped each other while heading north past the accident.
UHP reported only minor injuries from the semitruck accident, but lanes were forced closed and traffic came to a standstill as cars began lining up back into Orem.
Northbound traffic was backed up to the University Parkway exit in Provo before lanes were reopened just after 12:30 p.m. All southbound lanes were reopened at 1:15 p.m.
