Editorial wrong on guns

Regarding the Deseret News editorial "Granite got it right on guns," what the writer does not seem to understand is that Granite did not surround those guns with an army of regulations, as claimed. The Utah Concealed Weapons Act requires most of the same rules wherever concealed weapons are carried.

Your example of the widows sitting on the back row of the chapel is ridiculous. A concealed-weapons permit holder may be sitting next to her with a concealed weapon because they carry the concealed weapon everywhere and are not inclined to leave it unattended in their car when entering a chapel. I have fire extinguishers in my home that are there to use in an unexpected emergency. So it is with the permit holder. What are the chances that a deranged assailant will burst into a chapel shooting worshipers on the back row? What are the chances that a fire will break out in my home? I am prepared for either case, and I have no expectation that either will happen. I would submit that most concealed-weapons permit holders will not carry their concealed weapon into a church service. Even if they do, what harm is done?

And the conclusion that concealed-weapons permit holders are dealing with issues much larger than gun rights is nonsense. It is hard for me to imagine a group of newspaper professionals approving an immature editorial such as this one.
