Look for some big changes in this year's Deseret News Landscape Art Show, "Color of the Land."
First, the exhibition will be co-sponsored by the Days of '47 committee, becoming part of the state's July 24 celebration. Art juried into the show will be on display July 17-24 in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, giving participating artists an opportunity to display their art for an entire week in a more secure area.
Second, the money awarded in the three categories has increased: winner of the Purchase Award will receive $5,000 (the artwork, as in previous shows, will become part of the Deseret News' corporate art collection). Second- and third-place winners will receive $1,000 and $800, respectively.
Jurors for this year's "Color of the Land" are Richard Van Wagoner, Earl Jones and M'lisa Young Paulsen. Both Van Wagoner and Jones are members of the "Most Honored Artists of Utah." Van Wagoner has taught and created art for more than 30 years and is known for his superb watercolors. Also a teacher for many years, Jones is celebrated for his singular figure and landscape paintings. Young is the winner of last year's Purchase Award and continues to create fresh and colorful works.
Beginning Monday, entry forms for the competition/art show will available at local art galleries and museums throughout the state. Forms will also be available online at www.deseretnews.com/artshow/ and at the newspaper's office, 30 E. 100 South, between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
The exhibition is open to all Utah artists 18 years and older, working in the medium of painting, drawing, mixed media and printmaking. For more information, call Deseret News marketing, 236-6060.
