• U.S. troops backed by aircraft poured into Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit and fought pockets of hard-core defenders today. The presidential palace was seized without a fight and the city center was under U.S. control, the military said.

• Iraqi police and U.S. troops jointly patrolled Baghdad streets to quell the lawlessness that engulfed the capital after the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime. Looting eased, officials said.

• Marines searching Baghdad's neighborhoods found large caches of weapons and ammunition, including about 80 missiles capable of carrying nuclear or chemical warheads.

• The Syrian government denied charges by U.S. officials that Syria has weapons of mass destruction and is sheltering Iraqi leaders. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Syria wasn't the next coalition target but it has questions to answer.

• U.S. commanders said volunteers from Syria were among the foreigners helping Iraqis put up resistance against American troops in Baghdad.

• Two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and the ships in their battle groups will leave the Persian Gulf this week and return to their home ports, a U.S. defense official said.
