MAPLETON — The City Council on Wednesday picked Robert Bradshaw to assume the role of city administrator, replacing Stan Kantor, who resigned.

Bradshaw, a resident of Mapleton and currently working as the part-time economic development director in Springville, also teaches business administration classes at Brigham Young University. Mayor Dean Allan said Bradshaw will be paid about $25 an hour for the part-time Mapleton post.

The council also voted to give Kantor four weeks' severance pay totaling about $2,400. Earlier it considered giving him three months of severance pay in appreciation for his dedication to the city.

A retired California police captain, Kantor served as interim police administrator during a police controversy nearly three years ago in which former Police Chief Brett Barney was forced into retirement. The controversy was sparked by a proposal to disband the police force in favor of a contract with the Utah County Sheriff's Office, which was eventually abandoned. Allan credited Kantor with bolstering the small police force by bringing in a new chief and for improvements in the volunteer ambulance service.
