Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis released the name of the final candidate to replace former Salt Lake Police Chief E.L. "Bud" Willoughby, who retired in May.
Jay A. Carey Jr., chief of police in Newport News, Va., is the only out-of-state applicant among the four recommended to DePaulis Thursday by a nine-member review board. The other candidates are acting Salt Lake police chief Ed Johnson; Utah Highway Patrol superintendent Mike Chabries; and Terry Knowles, former special agent in charge of Salt Lake City's FBI office, who left to take over as chief of the Sacramento bureau in 1986.
DePaulis refused to identify the four until they were notified they were finalists. Confidentiality agreements were made with each of the candidates, DePaulis said.
DePaulis has said he would like to make a final decision in one week.
