Thanks to a $52,000 grant from Intel, students at Escalante Elementary School in Salt Lake City can learn hands-on science in a new science academy.

"The best part is working with the students as they learn and discover the wonders of science," Escalante principal Nancy McCormick said.

The academy will include visits from a University of Utah science professor, a student science club, an expanded school science library, a six-week summer science camp, a full-time science specialist, a junior engineering program and assistance to teachers who want to take graduate classes in science.

"This is a perfect example of how public education and private industry can work together," superintendent McKell Withers said.
