Salt Lake County prosecutors have charged a pair after police unraveled what they believe was an attempt to take money from former Utah Jazzman Thurl Bailey and his wife.

On Dec. 9 Sindi Bailey's purse was taken from her vehicle, charges state.

On Dec. 11, a man grabbed another woman's wallet at Maverik Country Store, 210 W. North Temple, and ran. Inside the wallet was $10 and identification, charges state.

On Saturday a man and woman tried to cash a check for $2,150 written against the Baileys' account and supposedly signed by Sindi Bailey, charges state.

The check was written to the woman whose wallet was stolen at Maverik. The pair offered an ID that looked nothing like the woman presenting the check. As the teller was checking on the matter the couple drove away, charges state.

On Sunday police entered a motel room near 1000 South and Main and found an "obviously counterfeit" identification card with the name of Sindi Bailey but the picture of a different woman, charges state.

A woman, 33, was charged with forgery, possession of a forged writing, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, attempted theft by possession, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and giving false identity to a peace officer. A man, 32, was charged with theft from a person.
