Cougars look to rally vs. SDSU

PROVO — There's a new sign that hangs on the entrance of BYU's practice field. It reads: "Now is the time. We must pull together."

The sign was coach Gary Crowton's idea and the phrase has evolved into an impromptu rallying cry for the Cougars, who are mired in a three-game losing streak and desperately in need of a victory today (1 p.m., KJZZ) when San Diego State visits LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Amid a disappointing season that has seen losses pile up as quickly as dubious factoids that document BYU's futility, it's easy to point out the negative:

  • The Cougars have lost five of their last six games and must win three of their final four contests to become bowl-eligible.

  • BYU has scored just 22 points in its last three games — the Cougars have been outscored 113-22 during that stretch — marking its worst three-game offensive production since the 1971 season.

  • The last time BYU lost four straight conference games was in 1968. The Cougars haven't lost four consecutive games overall since 1993.

  • BYU is trying to avert the ignominious feat of going from first to worst in the Mountain West Conference in the span of one year.

What's not easy during a campaign like this one is remaining positive. And Crowton is Norman Vincent Peale with a headset.

"He's a competitor. That's one thing about coach Crowton," said junior middle linebacker Mike Tanner, who will make his first collegiate start today in place of Paul Walkenhorst, who has switched to strongside linebacker.

"He doesn't like to lose as bad as anyone I've ever seen. When he loses, he's very positive about it. You can see it in his face and in his emotions that it's hard on him and it's hard on everybody. When you have a leader like coach Crowton, who's positive in the worst situations, it's easy to be positive."

It appears that Crowton's disposition has indeed spread through most of his team. At practice, the mood is light, as if the players are oblivious of their 3-5 overall record and 0-3 conference mark. Discouragement is not readily evident, despite all that's gone wrong.
