LAYTON - On August 16, our beloved wife and mother, Shirley Jackson Austin, left us to be with her Heavenly Father. Our lives were greatly enriched for having known her gentle spirit.

Shirley was born April 3, 1925, in Delta, UT to George and Rhoda Jackson. She was the youngest of nine brothers and sisters.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ralph L. Austin; sister, Ruth Anderson; brothers, Bernard, Lloyd Jackson; five children, Russell (Kathy), Fruit Heights, UT, Rolynda (Terry) Constein, San Diego, CA, Eugene (Lay-Hoon), Arlington, WA, Judy, Provo, UT, Harold (Charlotte), Syracuse, UT; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many "adopted" grand-children (and grand-dogs).

Shirley grew up in Delta, UT and later attended BYU. In 1946 she met Ralph on a blind date. They were married July 18, 1947 in the Manti LDS Temple. They lived in Salt Lake for four years, before moving to San Diego, CA. 41 years later, when Ralph retired, they returned to Utah, settling in Layton.

Shirley was active in the LDS church and the lives of her children. She taught them with love and supported them in all they undertook to achieve. Each of the three sons served missions for the church, in Peru/Ecuador, Switzerland, and Uruguay respectively.

In her last years, Shirley suffered greatly from a variety of health problems, but she took great joy in her children and their families. She also enjoyed the children in the neighborhood, who called her grandma.

We would like to express our gratitude to the doctors and staff who cared for her at the McKay Dee Hospital and to the many friends and neighbors who brought her so much joy. Shirley, we love you and are thankful for the good memories you left for us. We miss you.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tues. Aug 20, 2002, Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call Mon. 6-8 p.m. and Tues. 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. Email condolences to the family at llm@lindquistmortuary.com
