MEMPHIS — There were no late-inning heroics for the Salt Lake Stingers Friday night as they were shutout by the Memphis Redbirds 2-0.

Clint Weibl, who missed most of last season with a torn rotator cuff, went the distance for Memphis as he allowed just six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Weibl (2-2), who threw 75 of 110 pitches for strikes, was aided by four double plays turned behind him by the Redbirds infield.

Weibl received the only run he needed in the second inning on a home run by Mike Coolbaugh, who belted a 1-0 pitch from Donne Wall (0-1) over the left field wall. Memphis would add an unearned run in the sixth.

Jeff DaVanon had three hits, including a double for Salt Lake. Twice, he led off an inning with a single only to be erased on a double play ball off the bat of Alfredo Amezaga.

Bee Lines: The loss snapped the Stingers winning streak at four games, as well as a four game losing streak for Memphis.

Anaheim Angels infielder Benji Gil is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Salt Lake when the Stingers return home next Friday. He is recovering from a sprained ankle. Elvin Nina (2-3) will start Saturday night (5:05 on AM1230) against Memphis lefty Les Walrond (3-1).
