The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office believes two sixth-grade boys are responsible for vandalism at an LDS meeting house Thursday.
About $3,000 damage was caused to the interior of the church, 3150 S. 7200 West. In addition to spreading cleaning materials around some of the rooms and in the hallway, the vandals put human feces in a trash can and tried to light a fire in a separate incident, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy Peggy Faulkner.
At nearby Lake Ridge Elementary School Friday morning, the principal asked during the morning announcements for any student who may have heard something about the vandalism to report to the office. A short time later there was a long line outside the principal's door, Faulkner said.
The two boys, both 12, apparently couldn't keep their mouths shut and had been bragging to other students about what they had done, Faulkner said.
The sheriff's office wasn't sure Friday afternoon whether charges would be filed against the boys. Faulkner said investigators would leave the decision of how to deal with them up to church officials.
