The investigation into the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old Bountiful youth in the basement of his home last week is still under way, Bountiful police said. Police said they still consider it accidental but are having problems getting all the details.
Matt Sharp, the victim, was shot once in the face with a .22-caliber rifle shortly after noon June 23. He was taken by air ambulance to Primary Children's Medical Center and died Monday afternoon without regaining consciousness.Police Lt. Don Taylor said another 13-year-old boy was with Sharp in the basement of Sharp's home at 4094 S. First East when the shooting occurred.
But the boy has been in shock, Taylor said, and unable to provide many details of how the shooting occurred. The gun was locked in a gun cabinet, police said, but the two youths apparently obtained the key and removed the bolt-action rifle.
Another youth in the home administered first aid after the shooting, Taylor said, which probably kept the victim alive until the helicopter transported him to the hospital in Salt Lake City.
