Pamela Alsop, a Sandy homemaker who reads the Deseret News every day, won the newspaper's Top 10 Utah Stories of 2001 Contest.

"I just thought of what was most interesting or what affected me the most," she said. She was a junior high school life sciences teacher before having her two children. Alsop beat 286 other entrants.

Contestants were judged by how close they came to the consensus of Deseret News editors.

Second-place winners are Tim Dolan of Springville and Darrell Nielsen, Lakenheath, England. Nielsen is a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant who reads the Web edition, deseretnews.com.

Third-place winners are Bonnie Thomas, Amanda Floyd, J. Moyle Anderson; Kathe Thomas, David Thomas and Jeremy Thomas, all of Salt Lake City; David Leavitt, Nephi; Becky Hansen; Murray; Christopher Mann, Rexburg, Idaho; and Richard McKwinon, Provo.

Bonnie Thomas and Jeremy Thomas are mother and son; Kathe Thomas and David Thomas are wife and husband. The two pairs are unacquainted, and none of their ballots are just alike.

One of those winners has a name familiar to many readers — David Leavitt. Yes, he's the Juab County attorney who prosecuted polygamist Tom Green.

The winner receives $100 in gift certificates and "Through Our Eyes," a book that chronicles 150 years of history as seen through the eyes of Deseret News writers and editors. The second place winners receive $50 gift certificates and "Through Our Eyes." Third-place winners receive the same book.
