It’s a great day to be tied for first going into the finals. —Bingham assistant coach David Fonda

SALT LAKE CITY — Day one of the 5A boys tennis state tournament went mostly as planned for the favored teams on Thursday. Defending champion Lone Peak emerged from day one having advanced four of five positions to the semifinals, giving the Knights a total of nine points after the first day. However, the day was not necessarily owned by Lone Peak, as the historically deep field looks as competitive as ever after the first day.

Bingham also finished the day with four semifinalists out of the five positions, making for a tie for first with nine points apiece. While perennial powerhouse Brighton sits not far behind with seven points.

“We had a great day, to advance four of five was really what we were hoping to do, it’s a great day to be tied for first going into the finals,” Bingham assistant coach David Fonda said when asked about his team’s performance on the first day.

In first singles Lone Peak’s Micah Heimuli appears to be the favorite heading into the finals. Heimuli breezed through his first-round match, before facing a tough test in the second round in Ben Agrelius from Bingham. Heimuli easily defeated Agrelius in straight sets to advance to the semifinals where he will face sophomore Ryan Jeppson from Sky View.

Heimuli will face stiff competition from the other side of the bracket as 2016 first singles runner-up Viewmont’s Jack Taylor faces Brighton’s freshman phenom Redd Owen for a spot in the finals. Taylor breezed to the semifinals, dismantling a few younger players in straight sets to advance. The road for Owen was a bit tougher as the freshman dominated his first-round match before facing a tough test in Pleasant Grove senior Ty Harris. The two battled back and forth in a thrilling match before Owen claimed victory with a 6-4 win in the tiebreaker set.

In the second singles bracket Weber sophomore Bridger Harrison breezed to the semis where he will meet Brighton junior Derek Turley. Turley played a tough match in the second round, winning in three sets to advance to the semifinals.

The lower half of the second singles bracket delivered an intriguing semifinal matchup between Lone Peak junior Niles Cochran and talented Bingham junior Stockton Aubrey. Both players blew past the competition on their way to the semifinals.

Third singles semifinals will feature Bingham freshman Cody White, who played a tough second-round match, winning in three sets to advance. White’s opponent in the semis will be Davis sophomore Danny Zlotnick, who dominated both his first and second-round matches on the way to the finals.

In doubles two Bingham pairs appear to be favored early as the Miners' first doubles pair of senior Nathan Balls and Jared Tobler advanced to the semis unscathed despite a tough matchup in the second round against Lone Peak’s senior duo. The Miners pair will face a strong pair from American Fork who has dominated the competition so far.

In second doubles the Miners' pair of junior Austin Cox, and senior Jesse Ntawutarama dominated the field setting up another matchup against a strong American Fork pair. The winner of that semifinal will face an experienced senior pair from either Lone Peak, or Davis as the two pairs advanced to the semis with relative ease.

“Ya I’d say that’s the strength of our team, ya know Cody (White) has really stepped up for us so far, and that’s a big deal,” Fonda said when asked about doubles being the strength of the team.
