The Tooele Buffaloes (2-2) defeated the Morgan Trojans (0-2) 56-54 Wednesday night on a game-winning layup by junior Jeno Bins as time expired.
Morgan missed a shot after having a chance to take the lead in the final seconds of what had been a hard-fought game with the Buffaloes. After the defensive stop with 8.6 seconds left, senior point guard Mckay Pollmann found Bins open underneath the basket for the easy layup, giving the Buffaloes a huge win.
“I just knew I had to juke out my defender to score, and luckily, Mckay had a nice pass and was able to find me,” Bins said.
The Buffaloes jumped out to a fast start in the first quarter thanks to Dawson Banks and Lincoln Powers. The duo combined for 10 points in the opening quarter, outscoring the entire Morgan team. That, along with hot 3-point shooting, gave the Buffs a 21-8 lead after the first quarter.
Morgan stormed back in the second quarter on its way to a four-minute 10-0 run. The quick burst cut the Tooele lead down to just three points. Morgan’s Cade Russell led the Trojans in the final minute of the half by scoring seven of his game-high 21 points. His offensive performance was good enough for Morgan to tie the game at the break.
The game remained tight throughout the second half all the way to the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter. Russell tied the game on a 3-point shot and then gave the Trojans the lead on the next possession with a 3-point play.
With 15 seconds remaining in the game, Morgan attempted a go-ahead field goal, but it was off the mark and Tooele grabbed the rebound. The shot proved to be the last of the game for the Trojans.
The game featured 17 made 3-pointers, nine from Tooele and eight from Morgan. Trevor Rose and Russell led the way for Morgan with 34 of the teams 54 total points. Tooele had a balanced effort with five players scoring over five points. Juniors Banks and Bins led the scoring for the Buffaloes with 17 and 13, respectively.
Next up for the Buffaloes is the annual 2A/3A preview where they will square off against Richfield and Cedar, while Morgan will be looking to rebound against Region 9 powerhouse Desert Hills.
