Belle Jewel is headed to the next round on NBC’s “The Voice.”
Jewel, 18, of Provo, was in Monday’s episode of the battle rounds and sang against indie pop singer Halle Tomlinson, 18, of Boulder, Colorado. Both were picked by judge Alicia Keys during the blind auditions.
"I honestly had such a blast," Jewel said during a conference call Wednesday. "It was the most fun I’ve ever had on stage."
During the battle rounds, the judges, including Keys, Miley Cyrus, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, pair up their team members to sing a duet. Their judge picks a winner and that singer goes on to the knockouts, where they again compete against singers from their coach’s team, and this time they can sing different songs. After the knockouts, the next round is the live playoffs and then the live performance shows.
Jewel, who describes her music as “indie alternative with a retro vintage influence,” and Tomlinson’s battle was shown briefly Monday as they sang “Bennie and the Jets.”
“You both (have) risen to the occasion,” Keys said during the show. “Your voices are wonderful, powerful.”
Jewel said Wednesday that the judges made comments about how she was able to show show her individuality through her voice and her performance.
Their comments "meant a lot to me because it was something that I’ve been working on and that Alicia said she wanted to see from me," Jewel said.
Jewel said that Keys also had some advice for her.
"She told to be just the loudest version of myself and to just be me unapologetically and always express who I am at my fullest capacity," Jewel said. "And that is something I will always carry with me."
Jewel attended Brigham Young University briefly before she decided to go to New York to pursue music. She has since returned to Utah Valley.
The last Battle Round is Tuesday, and the Knockout Round is expected to start next week. “The Voice” airs on Monday and Tuesday evenings on NBC.
