KAYSVILLE — Davis’ boys and girls track teams opened the 2016 spring season with a pair of solid performances on its home track in the Davis Super Meet on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Led by Hunter Simonsen, who won three events, and Logan MacKay, who incredibly nearly broke a major state record in the first meet of the season, Davis’ boys rolled to the team title with 189 points followed by Herriman in second with 133 points.

Davis’ girls also enjoyed a cozy 50-plus point edge over Herriman finishing with 175.9 points compared to 122.9 for the Mustangs.

Davis’ girls finished with only four individual winners, but superior depth helped them rack up plenty of points throughout the meet.

Junior Aubrey Argyle won the 3,200 meters for the Darts with a time of 11:04.50, with Ally Geisler winning the 800 meters, Melanie Sullivan the 400 meters and Ruby Jane Mathewson the 100 hurdles.

Argyle is the defending 5A state champ in the 3,200 meters.

Herriman sprinter Kaysha Love was the lone double winner at the meet as she won both the 100 and 200 meters with times of 12.08 and 25.24 respectively. She’s the overall state record holder in the 100 meters set during her sophomore year in 2014.

Fellow Herriman sprinter Dallin Tycksen was a double-winner on the boys side winning both the 100 and 200 meters. He posted top five times in Utah in both events as a junior last year, and he’s already off to a flying start in 2016.

Davis’ MacKay was the star of the meet, though. He won the 800 meters with a blistering time of 1:52.00, less than a second off the state-record of 1:51.13 set by Park City’s Ben Saarel in 2013.

Elite runners usually don’t start threatening state records until late April and early May, but MacKay is already in midseason form. His best time as a junior last year was 1:53.09.

Simonsen had a great meet as well for the Darts winning the 110 hurdles, high jump and long jump — all with personal bests. He cleared 6’09 in the high jump, which would’ve been good enough for third best in the entire state last season.
