First round of 1A girls basketball tournament goes as expected, with a few surprises
RICHFIELD — The first round of the 1A girls basketball tournament went as expected with one exception.
The biggest upset of the day came when Region 20’s No. 7 seeded Parowan defeated Region 18 champion, Tintic 61-52.
Taylor Robb led the Rams with 15 points, while Ashlynn Blauer and Autumn Rogerson scored 14 points in the win. Tintic also had three players in double digits: Alix Walker (16), Bailey Wall (14) and Tina Wall (13).
The win means Parowan advances to the 1A quarterfinals where the Rams will face third ranked Bryce Valley at 7 pm. Thursday.
Bryce Valley earned a first-round win over Monument Valley 68-27. The Mustangs had 12 players score — two of those in double digits. Jailine Vasquez led the team with 11 points (three 3-pointers) and Brittney Shakespear added 10 points. Monument Valley was led by Kylie Reese, who scored 14 points.
Monument Valley and Tintic will meet in consolation play at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Valley defeated Green River 44-23 behind an impressive defensive effort. The Buffalo held the Pirates scoreless in the second quarter and didn’t allow a single player to score in double digits.
Nicole Heaton and Heather Roundy led Valley’s offense with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Presley Lovato led Green River with nine points.
The win means Valley advances to play Duchesne in the 1A quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Second-ranked Duchesne defeated Milford 51-24 behind the Mashaylee Giles’ 14 points and Melissa Robinson’s 10 points. Emily Barnes led the Tigers with 13 points.
Green River and Milford will meet in consolation play 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Region 17’s No. 2 seed Rich defeated Wendover 45-26, while Region 19 champion Monticello earned a win over Wayne 67-63. Monticello was led by Atlanta Black, who scored 20 points, Allie Maughan, who added 18 points, and Michaela Wolford, who added 16 points. The Badgers were led by Courtney Jackson, who finished with a game-high 24 points.
Lilia Brown and Kiera Groll led the Rebels with 12 points each, while Wendover was led by Aurora Rodriguez, who scored seven points. Rich and Monticello will play in the 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal, while Wayne and Wendover will play a consolation contest at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Top-ranked defending 1A champ Panguitch defeated region-rival Piute 40-35 in one of the day’s best games. The Bobcats were led by Chesney Campbell, who scored 16 points. Piute was led by Macey Dalton, who scored 12 points.
The Bobcats will play Tabiona, which beat St. Joseph 39-24 in the day's final game, at 4 p.m. Piute will play St. Joseph in the consolation bracket at 1 p.m. Thursday.
