A popular children's song by Elizabeth Fetzer Bates has been turned into an illustrated history book for families to learn about the pioneer children. "Pioneer Children Sang as They Walked" by Jessica Warner encapsulates the lives of the 25,000 children who made the trek to the Salt Lake Valley.
Warner teaches about early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints following the progression of the Primary song with the same title, which is included in the book. She shares the history about the distance and terrain they traveled, animals they brought, games they played, how they learned, songs they sang and how families worked, camped and prayed together.
Families may also enjoy the captivating artwork — a pictorial history — by several different artists. Warner has included a vocabulary page for key words, such as emigrant and quagmire.
Children of all ages can enjoy learning about early pioneers with this easy-to-read history of the youngest Saints. It is appropriate for all ages — advanced enough for older kids, yet simple enough for the youngest family members to enjoy.
