Westminster volleyball: Griffins travel to Asics/Wyndham Labor Day Classic

The Westminster women’s volleyball team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Southern California for the Asics/Wyndham Hotels Labor Day Classic hosted by Concordia. Westminster will play four matches over the course of two days.

The Griffins open the weekend on Friday when they face Concordia at 1 p.m MT, on court two of the CU Arena. They are back in action at 7 p.m., for a match with No. 8 Biola on court one. Westminster opens Saturday with No. 22 Vanguard at 3 p.m., at the Lions home court in Costa Mesa, California. The Griffins close the weekend against Westmont at 9 p.m., back on court two at CU Arena.

Live stats will be available for all the matches, and a live video stream is tentatively planned for the match against Biola on Friday night.

Westminster travels to Southern California after going 3-2 at the Sports Travel Northwest Invitational last weekend in Spokane, Washington. The Griffins claimed wins over Walla Walla, Evergreen and Simpson, while falling to 23rd-ranked Eastern Oregon and Northwest.

The Griffins recorded 12.56 kills per set in the five matches, and they currently lead the Frontier Conference in that category. Westminster is also atop the Frontier leaderboard in total kills (226), total assists (212), assists per set (11.78), total service aces (33) and total digs (277). The team hit .200 in the five matches and averaged 1.94 blocks per set.

Alexis Aalona led the way with 65 kills, and she ranks second in the conference and ninth in the NAIA in that category. Her 3.61 kills per set also rank second in the league and rank 26th in the country. Jessica Chellsen is currently third in the conference by hitting .319 in Spokane, while Taylor Gustafson is second in the Frontier with 161 assists and an average of 9.47 assists per set.
