An early penalty kick served as the game's only goal as Utah Valley University dropped a 1-0 match at Portland State in Friday's season opener at Hillsboro Stadium. The contest was part of a four-team tournament to open the year at Portland State.
Mackenzie Bean converted on the PK in the 13th minute after a foul was whistled just inside the top of the 18. Her goal found the lower right corner just out of reach of UVU goalkeeper Jessica Duffin.
"We were a bit tentative to start the match and then going down on an early PK didn't help the situation much," UVU head coach Brent Anderson said. "I thought that we found a lot better possession in the second half but didn't really generate much of an attack. I think the girls recognized some areas that we can adjust for Sunday and come up with a better result."
Duffin recorded six saves on the night as the Vikings' attack manifested 20 shots overall with eight coming on goal. The Wolverines also recorded a team save.
For Portland State, the win extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games, setting a new Big Sky Conference record. The Vikings were picked to defend their 2013 Big Sky regular season championship in the preseason poll.
Utah Valley now faces Drake on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT. Boise State defeated Drake, 3-0, in the first game of the tournament Friday afternoon.
