USA Rugby announced its All-American Collegiate rugby team July 18, and University of Utah’s Tonata Lauti was named to the first team backfield.
The Utes’ Spencer Vickery (forwards) and Danny Christensen (backs) were named as USA Rugby All-American honorable mentions. All three players return for the 2015 season.
The University of Utah will open practice for its fall sevens season Sept. 1. The Utes will play in the Bay Area Sevens on Oct. 25-26 and in the Pac Sevens on Nov. 1-2 or Nov. 7-8. The team also hopes to play in the Rocky Mountain Sevens and the Pacific Northwest Sevens.
Pioneer Day Sevens
A team of current and former Utes played in the Pioneer Day Sevens Rugby Tournament on July 24-25.
Joining the team were Lopeti Ofa; Austin Taylor; Taylor Johanson; Casey Raymond; Nate Kingsford; Keoni Hamala; Elliot McDaniel; and Sam Croft.
On July 25, the team went 2-1, beating the Park City Haggis and Southern Utah and losing to Humless. The next day they lost to Haggis and Humless and then defeated Southern Utah for third place.
Eagles to play in ARC
The United States’ 15s will play in the America’s Rugby Championship in Canada in October. The Eagles will take on Argentina on Oct. 11; Canada on Oct. 15; and Uruguay on Oct. 19. All the matches will be held in Langford, British Columbia, Canada.
