Advanced Placement classes aren’t all about the students.
According to the 2013 College Board AP report, 132,555 high school teachers taught an AP class in the United States. In addition to teaching the classes, many faculty members are spending nights and weekends preparing and grading practice exams.
“Behind and within these data are the daily sacrifices of AP students and teachers, including the late nights that students put in diligently studying and the Saturdays that teachers give up to help their students succeed,” the report said.
High school teachers in America also are gaining benefits from teaching classes, according to the report. Rich Lambert, a professor at the University of North Carolina, said both college professors and high school teachers benefit.
"We (high school teachers and college professors) have a lot to learn from each other,” Lambert said in the report. “We all learn together about new assessment strategies by working on the (reading), and then we share pedagogical strategies with each other.”
So this is a shout-out to the various types of teachers you see throughout U.S. high schools:
The flashcard creator
This teacher is so thorough, every week it's imperative you create a deck of flashcards, just to help you pass the class.
The Civil War buff
Nothing gets this teacher more excited than offering lessons on the war that shook the United States to the core.
This teacher is cool, hip and totally down-to-earth. They get you on a personal level and tell you everything you want to know — and more.
Equal sides, fair, objective — this teacher gives it to you straight, and even goes as far as highlighting the important journalistic moments throughout history.
The one who pushes
This teacher is worried about you, but they’re not going to forget about you. Each day of class this teacher will give you an inspirational quote or a new form of motivation.
“Look, you guys have lived in New England your whole lives and probably already know a lot about the colonial times. So we’ll skip that. Onto the War of 1812!"
The former XYZ
This teacher is the former marine or the former senator that’s teaching AP government, or the former college research scientist instructing you on biology. They know so much it actually hurts.
Each class, each lesson, it’s the same PowerPoint presentation and the same assignment for homework. At least it’ll be stuck in your head come test time!
This teacher will always highlight the activist movements in history and little else. It's all about the rights of the people, man!
BONUS: The one who we all wish taught AP classesComment on this story
This teacher is cool, hip and can relate to you personally, yet has a rock solid knowledge of the course subject. A combination of all the types listed above.
