USU Athetics: 82 student-athletes receive Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades for the 2013-14 academic year
The Mountain West Conference announced its 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients Tuesday, and Utah State had 82 student-athletes recognized as part of a league-record 651 student-athletes who were honored.
Of its 82 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes honored, Utah State had 23 student-athletes from women's track and cross-country recognized, along with 17 from men's track and cross-country. It also had 14 from women’s soccer; five each from football and volleyball; four each from men’s tennis, women’s tennis and softball; three from men’s golf; two from women’s basketball; and one from men’s basketball.
Utah State’s 82 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes for the 2013-14 academic year are the second-most in the league behind New Mexico’s 117. Boise State had 81 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes to rank third, followed by Colorado State (63), UNLV (51), Fresno State (50), Nevada (48), Wyoming (44), San Jose State (43), San Diego State (33), Air Force (29) and Hawai’i (5).
Utah State also had the most individuals honored in men’s track and field and cross-country (17) and women’s soccer (14), while volleyball tied for first (5). USU women’s track and field and cross-country (23) and men’s tennis (2) had the second-most Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, while football (5), men’s golf (3) and men’s basketball (1) tied for second.
Six Utah State student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade point average during the 2013-14 academic year including three from women’s track and field and cross-country in senior Katherine Vande Pol (animal, dairy and veterinary science), and freshmen Elise Maddox (spanish teaching) and Morgan Monks (family, consumer and human development). Also earning a 4.0 GPA were freshman soccer player Karlee Campbell (exercise science), freshman softball player Abby Indreland (mechanical engineering) and freshman women’s tennis player Katie Sweet (mechanical engineering).
The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the MW Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and having participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West sponsored sport.
During the 2013-14 academic year, Utah State had 242 student-athletes earn academic all-Mountain West honors and/or the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award.
