The Western Athletic Conference announced the 2014 academic all-conference teams for the sports of baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's outdoor track and field — a list that features 53 Utah Valley University student-athletes. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
A total of 308 spring student-athletes were named to the list. Of UVU's 53 representatives, 17 hailed from men's outdoor track and field, and another 11 came from the women's track and field program. Ten members of Wolverine baseball made the list, as did seven student-athletes from softball — the 2014 WAC Tournament champions. Finally, four members from both UVU men's and women's golf received the all-academic team honor.
"I could not be more proud of the outstanding commitment in the classroom our student-athletes have demonstrated this spring and throughout the academic year," Utah Valley Director of Athletics Vince Otoupal said. "We have enjoyed a tremendous amount of athletic success over the spring season, but that success becomes all the more gratifying when viewed alongside the continued academic achievement of these young men and women."
With the 2013-14 academic year now completed, 342 true freshmen and transfers were added to the All-WAC Academic team to bring the total of student-athletes recognized to 650. Forty-three Wolverine newcomers from all 14 UVU and WAC sponsored varsity sports appeared on that list. Including the 14 Wolverine wrestlers named to the Western Wrestling Conference All-Academic team, the grand total of UVU all-academic performers comes to 169 for the 2013-14 athletic year.
"To see over half of our total Wolverine student-athletes achieve all-academic status is outstanding," Otoupal said. "We have not fallen short in our commitment to and pursuit of the Wolverine way."
