SALT LAKE CITY — Mountain View rallied Saturday afternoon for its second consecutive 4A boys state tennis title.
"This year the emotions didn't come quite as readily, and my feeling was we are going to do what we can again and I'm not going to worry about the rest," said Mountain View coach Wilf Mueller, whose team secured its second title in school history. "I told the boys not to focus on anything else but their match, and whatever we get we'll get based on our skills."
Bruins senior Manuel Ortiz breezed through the competition en route to the second singles title. He finished the day with a 6-0, 6-2 title-match victory over McKay Luu of Maple Mountain.
Ortiz didn’t lose a single game during the first two rounds of the tournament, and used that confidence to combat his opponents Saturday.
"It really bumped up my confidence heading into today," said Ortiz. "I wasn't going to let anyone beat me, and I think my experience in the past tournament really helped today."
Mountain View's Jon Dollahite defended his first singles title in 2013 with an impressive outing Saturday, including a 6-3, 6-1 semifinal win over Timpview’s Paul Monson. Dollahite followed that up with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Olympus’ Caleb Brand in the frist singles title match.
"We've gotten to know each other pretty well over the course of the season, and it's just a matter of who executes a little bit better I think," said Dollahite. "The whole tournament I've only had a couple of bad games, and a couple of bad sets, so it's just been really great that I've had the confidence to do what I did this weekend."
Maple Mountain, which led after Friday’s opening rounds, settled for a second-place finish despite walking away with zero titles at the end of the day. The Golden Eagles sent three players into their respective title matches, only to walk away empty-handed.
Timpview junior Zach Simpson managed to collect a title for the Thunderbirds in third singles, finishing off Maple Mountain senior Collin Eaton in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 thriller.
Bountiful saw its shot at a second-place finish foiled after both of its doubles teams were defeated in the doubles title matches.
Brothers Tyler and Tanner Heaton helped Bonneville claim the first doubles title with a three-set 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 title-match victory over the Braves pair of Andrew Eyring and Trevor Lloyd. Ayler Brown and Ethan Nakaya came up just short for Bountiful in second doubles at the hands of crosstown rivals Austin Creer and Taft Holzer of Woods Cross, 6-4, 7-6.
