High school girls golf: Davis' young team captures 5A crown
Tom Smart, Deseret News
BOUNTIFUL — A year ago, Davis High came up just one point short of winning the 5A girls golf championship as the Darts watched Bingham celebrate its fourth-straight title.
This time around, the Darts left little doubt as their young team cruised to a 16-point win over Alta to win the 5A title Monday at Bountiful Ridge Golf Course. Davis finished with 326 points in the modified Stableford scoring system, while the Hawks came in second at 310.
Lone Peak finished third at 303, followed by Weber at 297 and American Fork at 285. Bingham was sixth at 271.
It was Davis' second girls golf title in school history, the other coming in 2009 before Bingham began its four-year run.
“It was awesome,’’ said Davis coach Lori Salvo of her team’s victory. “I have a lot of emotion because I know how hard these kids work and they put a lot of added pressure on themselves coming into this. We hadn’t seen Alta or Lone Peak so we knew it would be down the wire.’’
Among individual golfers, Alta’s Madi Rooker was the low scorer with a 1-under-par 71, a stroke better than Davis’ Laura Gerner. Lone Peak freshman Kerstin Fotu was third with a 73.
“It’s incredible — I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,’’ said Rooker, who finished fourth a year ago. “I tried to just stay focused on my own game. I couldn’t have done it without all the people here to support me today.’’
Rooker started strong with birdies on the first two holes and then after making a couple of bogeys, regained her momentum with a birdie at No. 12. The Alta golfer birdied No. 16 and made pars on the final two holes, but she didn't know she was the winner until she went in the clubhouse and saw the scores.
Gerner was hurt by a triple bogey seven on No. 7, but came back with birdies at 13 and 16 to finish a stroke behind Rooker. Fotu bogeyed the last hole to fall out of a tie for second.
While Gerner was the Darts’ top finisher and tallied 90 points in the modified Stableford system, Jessica Sloot tied for fourth place with a 79 (83 points) and Ashley Hale shot an 84 to finish in a tie for 10th place with 78 points. The fourth scorer for Davis was Tayler Brenchley with an 87 (75 points). Christine Sithivong (88) and Kylie Snow (101) were the non-scorers for Davis in the best four of six scoring format.
“We know how our one and two (Sloot and Gerner) are going to finish because they’re real steady Eddies, but it was our three and four (Hale and Brenchley) that picked it up and that’s where we beat the others,’’ said Salvo.
The good news for Davis is that all four of the low scorers will be back next year as Hale is a junior and the other three are sophomores.
Alta was unbeaten in region play for the fourth straight year, but a couple of players had off-days, according to coach Gary Schneiter, which hurt the Hawks’ final score. For the Hawks, it was their second runner-up finish in the past three years.
Among the individuals, Sloot and Audrey Kris of Hillcrest tied for fourth with 79s, Weber’s Haylee Chugg and American Fork’s Abby Taylor tied for sixth with 81s, last year’s runner-up Sam Crawford of Bingham was eighth at 82, Northridge's Madee Godfrey was ninth at 83, and Davis’ Hale and Layton’s Bailie Sacket tied for 10th at 84.
In the team competition, Fremont (265), Northridge (264), Herriman (244) and Copper Hills (243) rounded out the top 10.
