KAYSVILLE — The state’s two fastest runners put on quite a shot at the prestigious Davis Invitational on Saturday.

Despite a consistent rain, Logan’s Chad Artist and Herriman’s Kaysha Love both posted scintillating 100 meter times, the fastest times in the state over the past three years.

Artist won the boys 100 meters with a time of 10.64, just 0.17 seconds off the state record set by Murray’s Brian Hazelgren back in 1981.

Not to be outdone, Love took advantage of a favorable, legal wind and broke the 12-second mark, finishing with a remarkable time of 11.88. It was .03 seconds shy of the state record set by Brighton’s Aubrie Hale back in 2010.

With three weeks remaining before the state track meet at BYU, the underclassmen have several more cracks and breaking those coveted state records.

Love also won the 200 meters with a wind-aided time of 24.35 in the 200 meters. The sophomore was one of two double winners on the girls side at the Davis Invite. Hillcrest’s Ariana Williams won both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

Four other girls athletes recorded the best performance in Utah this year. They were, Ogden’s Sarah Feeny (800 meters, 2:14.18), Morgan’s Britten Duerden (high jump, 5’07), Herriman’s Amarissa Hawker (shot put, 44’00.50) and Herriman’s Mesa Havea (discus, 135’07.00).

On the boys side, Artist was one of several athletes who posted the best mark in Utah this season.

In his final home meet at Davis High, senior Trevor Leavitt won both the 200 and 400 meters, posting a state-best time of 21.58 in the 200 meters. The state record is 21.41 set by Woods Cross’ Jacopo Spano at last year’s state meet.

Three other boys athletes recorded the best performance in Utah this year. They were, Sky View’s Conner Mantz (1,600 meters, 4:16.99), Herriman’s Kyle Strauss (110 meters, 14.44) and Davis’ Andrew Tyndall (pole vault, 14’09).

Mantz also won the 3,200 meters in a time of 9:28.26, the fourth-best mark in Utah.

Mantz and Leavitt were named co-Male Athletes of the Meet, while Love was named Female Athlete of the Meet.
