Utah Valley University won both ends of a doubleheader, 8-1 and 9-4, over Northern Colorado in a Western Athletic Conference baseball series Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark. Rain in between the games caused a two-hour delay prior to the start of game two.
The Wolverines (18-22, 10-7) have now won four straight while the Bears fell to 6-36 overall and 1-16 in the WAC. Utah Valley homered four times, twice in each game, with Mark Krueger hitting his third of the year in game one and fourth in game two.
In the opener, the Wolverines used a five-run first inning and got five shutout innings of two-hit baseball from freshman Patrick Wolfe, who collected his first win.
In the five-run frame, Sean Moysh had an RBI single and Krueger drove in a run on a fielder’s choice before Greyson Bogden hit a three-run home run, his third of the year, for a 5-0 lead.
UVU took advantage of two hit batters and a walk in the inning, with the only hits coming from Moysh and Bogden.
The Wolverines added a run in the second when Moysh delivered his second RBI base hit. Ahead 6-1 in the fifth, Krueger snuck a fly ball over the wall in left for his third home run of the year.
The final Utah Valley run came in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Bogden, who had four RBIs in the game.
In the second game, Seth Rhineer went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. With UVU trailing 3-1 after the Bears scored three times in the top of the third, Rhineer and Krueger each hit solo shots in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
Utah Valley took the lead in the fourth on an infield single by Bogden and added another run in the fifth on a base hit by Rhineer.
Northern Colorado was within a run when the Wolverines rallied with four runs in the eighth. Kade Andrus had a pinch-hit, two-run double with a blooper down the right-field line. Jordy Hart followed with an infield single to drive in a run, and Rhineer had his third RBI with a single to center for the final tally.
Ryan Evans (3-4) got the win for Utah Valley. He allowed one earned run — four total — and struck out four in six-plus innings. A bullpen of Tory Ulibarri, Kyle Valgardson and Chad Michaud combined to throw three hitless innings to close out the win.
