Utah Valley University's Michael McPherson was named the Western Athletic Conference men's field Athlete of the Week for the week of April 14-20. The conference honor was announced Tuesday by the league office.

McPherson, a junior from Parker, Colo. (Chaparral Parker HS), placed second in the decathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Multi Events, setting a UVU school record in the process. McPherson broke the 12-year-old school record with 7,271 points, which also put him just 10 points shy of winning the event. Out of the 10 events in the decathlon, McPherson won three of them, as he took first in in the 100-meter dash (10.76), the long jump (7.22m) and the 400m dash (48.07). He also finished second in the 110m hurdles (14.89) and the 1500m run (4:34:50), and fourth in the high jump (1.96m) and the pole vault (4.30m). McPherson's decathlon score currently ranks him first in the WAC this season.

The conference honor is McPherson's third of the outdoor season and fifth total as he was also named WAC Athlete of the Week twice during the indoor campaign.

The WAC also recognized Texas-Pan American's Martin Casse as the league's track Athlete of the Week. Casse, a senior from Toulouse, France (Lycee-Toulouse Lautrec), won the 1,500-meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays with a time of 3:44.92, which is the second fastest in program history behind only his own time. Casse beat 120 other runners in the race. Casse's time is good for 31st in the NCAA West Region.

Idaho's Alycia Butterworth and Grand Canyon's Lauren Graham were also recognized as the league's women's track and field Athletes of the Week on Tuesday.

McPherson and the Wolverines are back in action starting Wednesday in Provo for the BYU Robison Invitational. The Invitational runs Wednesday through Saturday at BYU's Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex.
