UVU track: Utah Valley concludes busy weekend at Long Beach State, Utah State on Saturday

The Utah Valley University track and field teams concluded their busy weekend by competing at Long Beach State's Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif., on Saturday and at Utah State's Mark Faldmo Invitational in Logan, Utah.

Senior Ali Shields and sophomore Logan Rusch had strong showings for UVU at the Beach Invite as each posted top-20 finishes in their respective event. Shields led for the Wolverine women by taking third in her heat and 16th overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64 seconds, while Rusch led the men with a 20th-place finish in the 200m dash (21.98).

A day removed from running a 57.90 in the 400-meter dash at the Mt. SAC Relays, sophomore Sam Sweet bested her time by more than half a second in the same event at the Beach Invite. Sweet recorded a 24th-place finish in the 400 on Saturday with a time of 57.20.

Aisha Graham also performed well for the women's squad by winning her section in the 800m run and placing 30th overall with a time of 2:12.48, while Sydney Bricker finished second in her heat and 29th overall in the 100m dash (12.54). On the men's side, Rusch continued his strong meet by taking third in his heat and 33rd overall in the 100m dash with a time of 11.16.

In other notable performances for UVU on the track Saturday, Nelson Orton led the way for the Wolverine men in the 5000m run by taking 10th overall (16:22.69), while Josh Monsen took 32nd in the 800 (1:52.90), Samantha Reeves 36th in the women's 200m (25.56), Gately Garnett 45th in the 400m hurdles (1:06.25) and Mike Keith 47th in the 400m (50.57).

Lauren Hicks and Scott Moake posted strong outings for the Wolverines in the field events at the Beach Invite by taking 15th and 16th, respectively, in the women's triple jump (11.39m) and men's high jump (1.95m). Levi Ball also recorded a 28th-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 4.58m, and Shields took 23rd in the women's triple jump (11.16m) and 32nd in the long jump (5.26m).

Back at the Mark Faldmo Invite in Logan, a handful Wolverines had solid finishes. Bryce Richards led the group by taking second in the triple jump (13.27m) and ninth in the long jump (5.77m). Carson Van Wagoner also had a nice meet by finishing sixth in the 100 (11.15), while Tonilynn Kretschmer paced the women with an eighth-place finish in the high jump (1.50m).

The Utah Valley men and women return to Utah to take part at the BYU Robison Invitational next week. The meet runs Wednesday through Saturday in Provo at BYU's Clarence F. Robison Track and Field Complex.
