Marvelous truths of the gospel are on the earth today because of a young boy’s effort to find truth, taught Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge of the Seventy during the Sunday afternoon session of general conference.
That truth changed the world forever, but with truth also comes opposition, criticism and antagonism, Elder Corbridge said.
“Joseph said that when he was seventeen an angel told him that his ‘name would be had for good and evil among all nations among all people,’” said Elder Corbridge. “This remarkable prophecy is continuing to be fulfilled today as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has spread throughout the world.”
Whenever the truth is revealed with regard to the purpose and destiny of man, there will always be a force to oppose it, he declared.
"Beginning with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, down to the ministry of Christ and on down to our day there will always be an effort to deceive, derail, oppose and frustrate the plan of life.”
Even Jesus Christ — the Savior and Redeemer of the world — was rejected.
“Why?” Elder Corbridge asked. “Because He is the Truth and the truth will always be opposed.”
Drawing from the life and experiences of Joseph Smith, Elder Corbridge shared how despite the flood of revelation he received — who God is, how His church is established on the earth, pre- and post-mortal existence, priesthood and the ordinances necessary for exaltation — the Prophet was still persecuted and opposed.
“There is no dispute about what Joseph Smith accomplished, only how he did what he did and why,” Elder Corbridge said. “And there are not many options. He was either pretender or prophet. Either he did what he did alone or he had the help of heaven. Look at all the evidence, not any single piece, but the entire mosaic of his life.
“I testify that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, as is Thomas S. Monson today.
"God is our Eternal Father and Jesus is the Christ. We worship Them. Nothing compares with their creations, the Plan of Salvation, and the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God. In this dispensation we fulfill the Plan of the Father and partake of the fruits of the Atonement only by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel restored through the prophet Joseph Smith.”
