Bill Maher, an atheist comedian who hosts HBO's "Real Time," evoked the ire of some Christians after calling God a "psychotic mass murder" on a recent show.
During a discussion about "Noah," a biblical epic film that will be released in theaters at the end of March, Maher lambasted religious individuals who believe in a literal interpretation of the Noah story.
However, Maher said the most disturbing aspect of the Noah story "isn't the silly, it’s that it’s immoral. It’s about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God," The Washington Times reported.
"Hey, God, you know you’re kind of a (expletive) when you’re in a movie with Russell Crowe and you’re the one with anger issues," Maher added.
He also blamed religion for the decline in morality in America. "Conservatives are always going on about how Americans are losing their values and their morality, well maybe it’s because you worship a guy who drowns babies," said Maher.
"Internet Evangelist" Bill Keller, the leader of liveprayer.com, responded to Maher's offensive commentary with his own insults. Keller called Maher a "gutless blasphemous coward" and wants to debate Maher publicly, according to Christian Newswire.
"Maher, like his hero satan, is a typical gutless wonder who bravely runs his mouth when unopposed, but is a true coward when it comes to defending his blasphemous beliefs against someone who can articulate a case for the Christian faith like myself," said Keller.Comment on this story
Unlike Keller, actor Kevin Sorbo thinks believers should not directly engage Maher in a conversation. "There is no reason to even try to talk to a guy like that because he has so much hate," said Sorbo, according to The Raw Story.
"I wonder what happened to him in his lifetime, because the atheists I have met, not all of them are angry," Sorbo said. "I’ve got some very good friends who are atheists and they just don't believe, they simply don't believe. We've had great debates about it and things like that."
