RICHFIELD — A 9-year-old girl was hospitalized after she was accidentally shot by her 8-year-old cousin while sitting in the back seat of a moving car, police said.

Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Richfield police were called to Sevier County Hospital on a report of a shooting. An 8-year-old boy and his 9-year-old cousin were in the back seat of a vehicle traveling on Main Street near 500 South, when the boy accidentally shot the girl with a .45-caliber handgun, according to a statement from Richfield police.

The bullet "entered and exited the victim, and then exited the vehicle. At this time the victim is expected to be fine and is in stable condition," according to police.

Richfield police declined to answer additional questions about the incident Wednesday, including where the gun may have come from and how the 8-year-old may have taken possession of it. The girl's name was also not immediately released.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
