UVU golf: Wolverines in ninth after 18 holes at SUU Invite

After 18 holes of golf at the inaugural Southern Utah Invitational being contested at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, the Utah Valley women's golf team sits in ninth place with a total of 327.

Juniors Brooke Whittaker and Heather Mathison are leading the way for UVU, as they are tied for 22nd place at 7-over par. The pair of golfers fired identical 79's to lead the Wolverines on Thursday.

Behind Whittaker and Mathison, sophomore Cassandra Lesa is next for Utah Valley as she will enter Friday's final round tied for 46th place at 12-over (84). Freshmen Monica Yeates and Kimberly Nyhus round out UVU's field of five as they sit in 50th and 64th, respectively, after shooting an 85 and 89 on Thursday.

As a team, the Wolverines are in ninth place after tallying 39-over par during the first round. Oral Roberts leads the tournament at 305 (+17), while host Southern Utah is in second (308) and South Dakota State as well as fellow WAC member Grand Canyon are tied for third (309). UVU will enter Friday just four shots back of seventh-place Creighton (323).

Also playing in the tournament as an individual for UVU is junior Hannah Herman. Herman currently finds herself in 62nd place after carding an 88 on Thursday.

Friday's final 18 holes of play begins at 8:30 a.m. Following the conclusion of the SUU Invite, UVU will remain in St. George to take part at the BYU at Entrada Classic on Monday and Tuesday.
