UVU golf: Wolverines finish in 11th, Nyhus leads way at +11

The Utah Valley University women's golf team dropped two spots during Sunday's final round to end NAU's Red Rocks Invitational in 11th place. The Wolverines shot 57-over at the 36-hole tournament that was contested at the OakCreek Country Club in Sedona, Ariz.

Redshirt freshman Kimberly Nyhus led the way for UVU by tying for 28th place at 11-over par. After carding a 77 on Saturday, Nyhus followed it up with a 78 on Sunday to finish the two-day tournament with a 155. Junior Brooke Whittaker, who entered Sunday's final round tied for eighth after firing a 74 during the first 18, ended the tournament tied for 40th after shooting an 83 on Sunday. For the tournament, Whittaker finished with a combined total of 157 (+13).

Freshman Monica Yeates was Utah Valley's next best finisher as she posted a 160 (+16) to take 52nd after carding identical rounds of 80 during the tournament. Sophomore Cassandra Lesa posted a 7-over 79 on Sunday to take 63rd with a 163 (+19), while junior Heather Mathison rounded out UVU's top five as she took 79th with a 165 (+21) with rounds of 84 and 81 at the tournament.

Junior Hannah Herman and sophomore Kalea Heu were also in action for the Wolverines and took 89th (170) and 99th (177), respectively. The duo, which played the weekend as individuals, carded an 86 and 88, respectively, on Sunday.

As a team, UVU took 11th place out of 18 teams with a two round tally of 633. Xavier won the tournament with a 588, while Sacramento State and host Northern Arizona tied for second with identical 602's. Fellow WAC foe Grand Canyon finished in fourth place with a 604.

With the 11th-place finish, the Wolverines finished ahead of Oakland, in-state rival Weber State, Northern Colorado, British Columbia, IUPUI, Mesa CC and North Dakota.

NAU's Jacquie Miller won the top medalist honors at 3-under par for the tournament (141).

The Wolverines will now take the next week off but will return to the action on March 13 and 14 at the Southern Utah Invitational in St. George, Utah.
