State and local governments are sending people to jail — for being poor.
The Huffington Post published an article that said governments within the United States are locking people away for being poor, specifically for not paying their fines or debts. The article cites one specific case in Virginia Dickerson, who may return to jail “if she fails to pay her $8,000 in fines.”
“Under the U.S. Constitution, Americans can’t be jailed for failing to pay their debts when the reason for their failure to pay is poverty,” HuffPost said. “But in Washington and other states, county governments get around that by insisting poor defendants could find a way to pay if they simply tried hard enough.”
