SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women’s soccer team will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., for a game with Westmont (Calif.) in the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship Opening Round. The game will be played Saturday at Thorrington Field on the Westmont campus with a start time to be announced later this week.

Westminster will be making it second trip to the national tournament after winning the Unaffiliated Group Tournament. The Griffins have an 11-7-2 record, and they have won five of the last six games played.

Westmont is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and received an at-large invite to the field of 32. The Warriors went 15-1-3 during the season, with the only loss coming during last weekend’s Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament. They will be making a 16th trip to the NAIA National Championships with a 28-6-6 record and five national championships.

The last time Westminster made the field of 32 was in 2011. That season, the Griffins traveled to Concordia where they lost, 1-0. That is the only other time Westminster has played in the national tournament.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the final site of the tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., and would play the winner of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) and Trinity International (Ill.) on Dec. 2 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
