PROVO — BYU announced a 3.1 percent increase in undergraduate tuition Thursday for the 2014-15 school year, the third-smallest hike in the past decade.

The $75 increase brings undergraduate tuition for one semester to $2,500.

Other tuition categories will see similar increases of about 3 percent. The revenue will pay for rising campus expenses for salaries, payroll benefits, travel, supplies, library and laboratory materials, etc., according to a BYU press release.

The 2014-15 school year will be the fifth in a row with a tuition increase between 3 percent and 3.3 percent. That is about half of the what the annual increases were during the recession when, as colleges and universities around the country experienced rougher waters and raised prices accordingly, BYU raised tuition between 5.2 percent and 6.3 percent.

The 6.3 percent raise came in 2008-09 and was the largest boost in 15 years. In all, the cost of a semester of undergraduate tuition has gone up a total of $795, from $1,705 in the 2005-06 school year.

Next year's tuition for most graduate students will rise to $3,155 per semester, up $90. Law and business school students will pay $5,810, an increase of $170.

Undergraduate tuition for spring and summer terms beginning in 2015 will also increase, $38 to $1,250. Spring/summer 2015 rates for graduate students will be $1,578, an increase of $45.

Students who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pay twice the listed tuition rates, so non-LDS undergraduates will pay $5,000, an increase of $150; advance-standing non-LDS students will pay $6,310, up $180; and non-LDS law and business graduate students will pay $11,620, an increase of $340.
