UVU golf: Wolverine women's golf closes fall season in Hawai'i
The Utah Valley University women's golf team closes its fall season at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Schofield Barracks, Hawai'i, this week. The 54-hole tournament will run Tuesday through Thursday and will be contested at the Leilehua Golf Course on Oahu.
Live scoring for the entirety of the tournament can be followed by visiting Golftstat's website, and action will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. HT (12:30 p.m. MT). The par-72 Leilehua Golf Course will be played at 6,228 yards.
"We've been practicing well and the girls have been working hard as of late. We have also seen some solid results during practice but now it is time to see those same results during competition," head coach Sue Nyhus said. "We are focused on having a great tournament and hopefully we are able to play well."
The University of Hawai'i is hosting the tournament, and in all, eight teams will take part at the invite. Besides UVU and the host Rainbow Wahine, fellow WAC foes Grand Canyon and New Mexico State will be in attendance, as well as BYU, Colorado State, Northern Arizona and Sacramento State.
All eight Wolverine golfers will make the trip and be in competition at the tournament. Five will play for UVU, while the other three will participate as individuals. Juniors Lynn-Marié Nagel, Brooke Whittaker and Hannah Herman, sophomore Cassandra Lesa, and redshirt freshman Kimberly Nyhus will represent Utah Valley. Junior Heather Mathison, sophomore Kalea Heu and freshman Monica Yeates will play as individuals.
The tournament will mark a homecoming of sorts for Heu and Lesa as they each hail from the Aloha State. Heu calls Wailuku home, which is on the island of Maui, while Lesa comes from Kaneohe (Oahu). Lesa's hometown is just 22 miles from the Leilehua Golf Course.
The Wolverines have been off since Oct. 7-9, when they placed 14th at New Mexico State's Price's Give `Em Five Intercollegiate. Nagel led Utah Valley at the tournament by placing 43rd overall at 12-over-par. Whittaker (+15) and Lesa (+17) were next, as they placed 54th and 57th, respectively.
Whittaker leads UVU on the season with a 77.20 scoring average. The junior from St. George, Utah, also holds the best single-round score of the season for the Wolverines with 70. Whittaker carded her 1-under-par 70 at Weber State's Wildcat Invitational on Aug. 30, a tournament that she won by two strokes.
Nagel trails Whittaker on the year by just a stroke with a 78.10 scoring average, while Nyhus is third on the team (79.40) and Heu is fourth (79.86).
Following this week's Rainbow Wahine Invitational, UVU will be off until late February when it opens its spring season at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
