Westminster volleyball: Griffins cruise to sweep of Dickinson State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women’s volleyball team cruised to a three-set sweep of Dickinson State (N.D.) in a Frontier Conference match on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster moves to 12-12 overall this season with the (25-17, 25-17, 29-27) victory. The Griffins are now 6-5 in league matches and looking at three straight matches at home.

The Griffins got out to an early start by hitting .237 during the opening set victory. They racked up 15 kills in the set while holding Dickinson State (3-20, 0-11) to just seven kills and negative -.033 hitting. Jovana Sisovic got her solid night started with four kills and two blocks in the set.

The second set was more of the same as Westminster picked up 16 kills while hitting .286 in the frame. DSU had just seven kills in the set and also surrendered three service aces to the Griffins. Alexis Aalona and Sisovic notched five kills apiece in the set.

The third set was played tight as DSU held a 21-16 lead before a 7-0 run by the Griffins gave them the lead. Westminster used 19 kills in the set to take the win and overcome the 14 kills from the visitors. Sisovic had another seven kills in the third with Alyse Horton adding five kills and Kyndall Kordakis picking up 12 digs.

Sisovic finished the night with a match-high 14 kills and zero hitting errors for a .483 percentage. The 14 kills without an error is the most by any Griffin player this season. Aalona finished with 10 kills and 15 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Horton added with kills and hit .385. Kordakis finished with 21 digs in the three sets, and Emily Atkinson posted 29 assists, 11 digs and two aces for her sixth double-double of the year.

Westminster had a 50-28 edge in kills and hit .227 while holding DSU to .086 for the match. The Griffins posted five service aces along with 68 digs and 8.5 blocks.

Melissa Avila led DSU with seven kills, and she also recorded eight digs. Natasha Malana added 20 digs, and Aly Schieno and Linaya Schroeder had six kills apiece.

The Griffins are back in action Saturday with a crucial home match against Carroll (Mont.). The action will begin at 2 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
